Ron Perlman Isn’t Eager To Do ‘Hellboy 3’ But Thinks Fans Deserve It

Ron Perlman is not eager to do Hellboy 3 but still feels that fans deserve the movie to be made.

Way back in 2004, Ron Perlman first appeared as Hellboy with Guillermo del Toro directing the picture. The film itself was well-reviewed by critics but wasn’t a huge financial success. It ended up grossing less than $100M worldwide on a $66M budget. The film itself, however, did well enough on home media formats that a sequel was greenlit.

The sequel, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army was likewise well received by critics but only managed to earn $168M worldwide on a $88M budget. It was also bolstered by home media sales which allowed a proposed third installment, Hellboy 3, to go into development. Unfortunately, the film fell into development hell. and remains one of the projects hover above Ron Perlman’s and Guillermo del Toro’s heads.

Seemingly in place of the third Ron Perlman Hellboy movie, we instead got the Hellboy reboot starring David Harbour. The actor himself has admitted that he hasn’t seen the film nor has any interest in seeing it and most audiences and critics seemed to be with him on this. The film was trashed by critics and was a massive flop, only earning a little over $55M worldwide on a $50M budget.

Since Hellboy 3‘s cancelation, both Ron Perlman and director Guillermo del Toro have moved on with their careers. The director has gone on to win two Oscars and Ron Pearlman continues to appear in more movies than one can count. While speaking to The Independent, Perlman admitted that he was not eager to reprise the role of Hellboy, citing his age but still felt that he, del Toro, and the studio owed it to fans calling on the director to get it done:

“Am I eager to do Hellboy 3? No, I’m 71 f-cking years old. We owe this to the fans. And we should give it to them because it would be an epic conclusion. So Guillermo, if you’re reading, I’m not done pounding you to get this f-cking thing done.”

Here is the official synopsis for David Harbour’s Hellboy:

Based on the graphic novels by Mike Mignola, Hellboy, caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge.

Directed by Neil Marshall from a script co-written by character creator Mike Mignola, Andrew Cosby, and Christopher Golden, Hellboy stars David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Penelope Mitchell, with Daniel Dae Kim.

Hellboy is now available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of the franchise and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
