Patty Jenkins Reflects on Her Exit From Thor: The Dark World

A few years ago, Patty Jenkins was set to become the first woman to direct a Marvel Studios film. Marvel signed Jenkins to helm Thor: The Dark World, but she ultimately dropped out before being replaced by Alan Taylor took over. Jenkins eventually brought Wonder Woman to the big screen, and also directed the upcoming sequel, Wonder Woman 1984. However, Jenkins recently shed some light on her departure from The Dark World during a new interview with Vanity Fair.

“I did not believe that I could make a good movie out of the script that they were planning on doing,” said Jenkins. “I think it would have been a huge deal — it would have looked like it was my fault. It would’ve looked like, ‘Oh my God, this woman directed it and she missed all these things.’”

“[The Dark World] was the one time in my career where I really felt like, ‘Do this with [another director] and it’s not going to be a big deal,” added Jenkins. “And maybe they’ll understand it and love it more than I do.’ You can’t do movies you don’t believe in. The only reason to do it would be to prove to people that I could. But it wouldn’t have proved anything if I didn’t succeed. I don’t think that I would have gotten another chance. And so, I’m super grateful.”

Natalie Portman was reportedly upset Jenkins’ departure, and she subsequently sat out of Thor: Ragnark. However, Portman will reunite with Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder in Thor: Love and Thunder next year. That movie was slated to begin filming later this year, but the coronavirus pandemic may have pushed that time table.

As for Jenkins, her next film, Wonder Woman 1984, was pushed back to August 14 earlier this weekThor: Love and Thunder will strike theaters on November 5, 2021.
