The CW continues to round out its programming schedule for the 2020-21 TV season, and one of its new offerings will feature very familiar characters. Deadline is reporting that the network’s Superman & Lois series has officially made it past the pilot stage. The show is expected to premiere this fall.
Superman & Lois was first announced back in October. Former Flash showrunner Todd Helbing is spearheading the series, which features Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch reprising their roles from previous Arrowverse appearances. Viewers will watch as the titular couple balance Clark Kent’s duties as the Man of Steel with their new roles as parents to their young son, Jonathan.
Of course, Superman & Lois isn’t the only new DC show The CW has in the works. The network is also gearing up to air its “Green Arrow and the Canaries” episode of Arrow, which is expected to serve as a backdoor pilot to a full-fledged series of the same name. Deadline’s report suggests there’s a chance that The CW might only air one of these new shows next year. But we’ll have to wait until the network execs review all their incoming pilots for the upcoming season.
It’s unclear how many episodes will make up Superman & Lois’ inaugural season. The CW’s latest Arrowverse series, Batwoman, was initially given a 13-episode order before getting an upgrade to 22 episodes. This trial run was most likely indebted to the fact that Kate Kane’s masked persona is a lesser-known character and, therefore, a bigger risk. Regardless, it’s possible that Superman & Lois could follow a similar path.
